All of a sudden there's like a million freaking Aion DB's available. Curse made theirs public recently (but it's got a stupid name) and others followed suit. MMODB has one, and it's got 3D models (zomg). Some other guy on our forums is making one too, but I forgot his name again. His avatar had the Milfblade user in it, that's how I recognize the user. Hold on... Okay, yeah, it's Kindred.

Pardon my stupidity, but why are DBs popular, again? Someone messaged me on MSN last night with the news about AionArmory. Plasma, I think. He sounded excited. Why? What good are DBs? What's the use of looking so far ahead at weapons and armor you don't even have to spec your toon to use correctly? It's not like your stats won't match it when you eventually get it, or you couldn't just go to a PvP NPC and check out what's available.

As for mob spawns and drops and quests and shit: seriously, if you don't know how to do a quest or where to find a mob, you're playing the game wrong (or not paying attention). Yeah, a few quests are bugged to condom come, I can understand asking a guildie how he finished one. Sure, I admit, DBs are fun little tools that satisfy the anal-retentive twinkie crowd, but they're not really worth the alt+tab (or second screen), are they? Am I missing something? Educate me.

Nothing personal against the people who made these DBs. I've been in contact with all three of them some way (yes, even the AA guy, who is actually a rather decent fellow). I just don't really see the use of such a tool. Same goes for wikis. They're hella fun to check out when you're bored or utterly confused by a quest, but that shouldn't be often.

Anyhow, good luck, fellow metasites! Make an addon for IPB 3.0 and I'll use it.

AA is just like WARDB, a carbon copy of wowhead's framework; made with the intent to bring more revenue and further the capatalisation/monopoly of such things by Curse.

I like them, I think they're useful tools, and the quality bar has definitely been raised now that there's so much money involved. So I dunno, use and abuse them for your own purposes, don't click any ads, and it's all plain sailing.

It makes me a little sad that these things aren't made out of passion by players any more, but I'm not gonna disadvantage myself and not use a tool everyone else is just out of principle.

Not a fan of Player's Guides when you were growing up I take it?

I read the Pokemon Red & Blue gameguide by Prima about 100 times before I ever got a GBC and Pokemon Yellow.

I was hardcore into guides. Was.

Now I just play and see what happens.

the elite players know what to do, where to go, and what to get or not to get before everyone else

and that AA site sucks balls...its half assed and most of it is wrong....i checked out alot of and its got wrong quest rewards for both sides

if anyone thinks AS and curse are still strong there blind and stuck in the past of what was supposed to be

they put a filter on the word "aionblah" btw so none of us can even mention this sites name in any post or any referance in any way, shape or forum

i am going to blast them in the general section this week for blocking my signature since sigs were always allowed to have stuff from other sites in...now there sensoring that like forum nazis and not allowing freedom of speach in my sig

I dig things of that nature much for the same reason why I'd turn through a Dungeon Master's Guide or a Monster Manual in DnD. I've never DM'ed a game in my life, but it's interesting to see what the separation is between similar monsters and beasts, or the 'challenge rating' on a device, trap or feat is just for it's own sake. (Not that I remember any of it when it matters... I can still get whomped into glue after reading that a certain monster or boss is too strong for me, and I'd still march right in anyway.)

I find it's good to peruse once in a while, or to find a 'brass ring' in Armor or Weapons when one has no idea on valuation for the in-game marketplace (don't know if Aion has one yet) should a trade or purchase become necessary down the line.

But I can agree that reading obsessively on quests that have low significance or splitting hairs on a min-max build does not a good player make... unless you end up tanking a lot, then I could see knowing a mission or raid like the back of your hand as early as possible being helpful for your party.

i was refering to mark and directing that to him lol....also just from personal experience your comparing DnD which is not visually based other then imagination (which btw is more powerful then the actual visuals from pc games imo) is a big diff going to guides for that and a online game ur actually playing and seeing 1st hand

dbs are kinda pointless imo since this game doesnt even let you pick your stats for your character other then whats on ur wepaons and armor and even then its limited cause most class's have certain things they need or they will be bad as that class

the questing personally should all be done so dont really need a db for quests...most people will do them all anyways and in aion they have the locate button which push's aside the need for a guide for quests

weapons and armor? again no need for db for aion anyways cause the quests give you your amors and weapons and crafting does the rest but even if you craft armors for example in aion the level "xx" blue is pimp and if you +10 it cause its cheap to do so you can ride it out until you get your bad ass blue set from questing at level 37...ur weapon ...same thing...level "xx" blue weapon +10 ride it out until 32 then + that some...not to +10 unless its off hand sword cause at level 41 you get your GOLD weapon which is just as good as the abyss weapons but was free

a db wont tell you this cause those are player strategies and are based on mass opinion...not all will do it cause they might think or try out something that might be better

i left out the stuff and details cause its what we are learning by playing chinese version to get a advantage over NA players who havent learned this or played chinese aion yet

no db can really prepare you for a game cause the experience on your own and your friends tellig you the tips are worth much more

I'm making mine purely out of passion (for the game, and for the knowledge and experience of writing one). Since its a hobby though I just can't compete with the timescales the big boys have - I have to code and design everything myself in my spare time. It'll take a bit longer to be released, but by god when it is I'll make damn sure it rocks. There are some features where its pointless to re-invent the wheel and people will recognise similarities between the sites, but the finishing touches and polish is what draws me usually.

Its like wowhead.com vs wowdb.com - I think I've been to Curse's about 10 times, whereas ZAM's I visit almost daily.

As for why people use them.. mainly because its hard to remember 1000's of details (recipes, drops, etc). Sure most of the core game features you'll pick up and remember, but there's a limit, and DB sites just help you along. They also help when discussing the game on forums - I'm sure you've all seen the tooltip/syndication stuff by now.

Sorry, should have mentioned "J/K" after that first line. I'm not butthurt at all.

I see the difference between MMO's where the fighting is automatic and Pen and Paper where you have to know the math. And player valuation is always a factor in selling stuff. Something could be at the highest level and acceptable damage output, but if people want something else, there's no way you're going to sell it for millions.

But hell with it, I still like to peek when I'm bored at work.

This. Also the only other thing I want is a char dev so I can figure out what would be the best stat mix for tanking/pvp without trying to mine all the data on weapons/armor/stones and where they drop/quest. Having a DB is so much easier to theorycraft/plan ahead of time.

Maps to dungeons are nice too, between getting lost 2/3 times and make a good run on first attempt I'll take the last
