All I thought they were good for was for when you were at work or something, to have a look at stuff because you can't play the game. Kinda like a little fix. though Forums are good for hat too.

I think they will be useful for figuring out which mobs drop the shit you want or quests that your not sure which NPC starts... but the quests themselves, once you have them, tell you where everything is and if it doesnt click on the name in the quest log and it gives you MORE information. I actually really like the questing system in aion, its nice.

I think there's just a demand for them, initially game developers didnt provide this since they didnt want to spoil their own games, and some like in DAOC even wanted to prevent other sites from doing this. Its like FAQ's, Guides, Spoilers, except in a really easy to use, searchable database and now with whizz bang features. Now we have WoW's Armory, GW Wiki, LOTRO Guide Book, Aion Player Guide, EQ2 Players, so more developers out there are getting the idea that players want all these stats and its a way to keep the players coming back vs them getting frustrated at being unable to complete a quest or find this location etc. Before it was just the fansites doing this but as the demand for data becomes more towards completeness, accuracy and being realtime, the developers are gonna start making these sites. I believe Turbine wants to do the whole social database thing. So to say its becoming mainstream

Plus crowdsource information, its much different once you have input from a lot of players.

also the quests tell u what mobs u need to kill for quest drops and even the locate button tells u where they are....db for aion is worthless really cause its actually laid out very well

It's DB sites are useful really only for two things. Checking out Items/Gear well before you have the chance to actually use them. In the case of Aion.. we can't play the game, but we can look at the most powerful weapons in the game. The other thing, is for ease of studying other classes skill sets, which is pivotal in PvP. Now of course... you won't be able to calculate exactly how powerful those skills will be when scaled with an actual character build... but it gives you a good idea what each class is working with and what to expect... so you can formulate counters.

Really though.. it's just a short cut. Just like Add-ons and Macros. It allows those who wouldn't normally play at high levels to do so.

I am not gonna argue the pros and cons of DBs, you either like and use them, or you don't. My toy of choice is wiki, and I got into wiki and have stayed in it for one reason... I like the games and I enjoy sharing my knowledge (what I have of it with others. The best part if Wiki is that, if it catches on, you are not doing it alone. The community can join you and use the tools you have made and, before you know it, there's 10 players, then 100, sharing and giving back.

The thing I love about the tool we have created at ZAM is the integration of the DB and the Wiki. When I started, I would have KILLED to have DB that I could connect into pull from, so that the wiki does what it does best, and the DB does what it does best. THAT is why we call it a Wikibase. There is no DB, yet, for Aion, but I am talking to the big guy about it, and I am gonna see him later this week at SOE Fan Faire, so I have my hopes he will agree that this game deserves the full ZAM treatment, but I will still do it even if it is pure wiki with no DB.

Sure, I get a paycheck from ZAM, but... they are not paying me to do THIS game, yet. It is just Vendolyn and I, playing the game and trying to understand the structure of it so we can build the framework that we hope others will come and use... because we love this game.

Just an update. Looks like he big guy has decided that the ingame info makes a db sorta pointless for Aion, so I do not think we are gonna do one. That said, I am forging ahead as a pure wiki. I know that the data at AionArmory is always gonna be ahead of me, but what they don't have: quest details, hints (except those added by users), and guides, is where I have my niche to fill. I think one of the best parts I have is my Quest Series pages, where you can see a total picture of the series of quests for a zone, or a campaign, and what quests are related/restricted to/by others.

So far I have all of Poeta and Ishalgen done, most of Verteron and Altgard, and the Campaign quests for those areas. More as I get my toons higher.

Of course, this is a Wiki so ANYONE can come help, if they have a mind to. If you are in this weekend and run into a quest that is NOT obvious, feel free to drop by http://www.zam.com/wiki/Aion, look up the quest, and if I don't have the infoz, just click Edit and add your experience. A free-to-register ZAM account is required to edit the wiki, but you do not have to pay for a Premium account to do that.

Right now there are only 2 people contributing: Vendolyn and me. We could really use some help!
